Psychotherapy and Consultation

Dr. Tom Bien is a practicing psychologist in Albuquerque, New Mexico. With over 20 years experience, Dr. Bien uses a mindfulness approach to psychotherapy.  Mindfulness integrates a number of ways to help people overcome emotional difficulties and problems in living. His training includes cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, and psychoanalytic approaches. He works primarily with individual adult clients and couples. 

Dr. Bien understands the work of psychotherapy as a mindfulness practice. When we allow ourselves to become more deeply, acceptingly aware of our problems in the context of a caring relationship with a therapist, we begin to find our way our of problems which may have seemed unsolvable to begin with.

Sessions typically begin with a few minutes of conscious breathing to center down and deepen the level of work during the therapy hour. Therapy sometimes also includes work with dreams.

For people outside of the Albuquerque area, Dr. Bien is also available for phone consultations regarding the practice of mindfulness or psychological problems. Such consultations are by appointment and must be scheduled ahead. These consultations are not considered a substitute for ongoing psychotherapy and are not appropriate for people in acute crisis situations.
